 Job Description

 This is a senior level position with the expectation of independently working to produce complete controls solutions and electrical design packages based on customer specifications and standardized design practices used at our client. Applicants are also expected to have the ability and experience to lead others in the design of a project with a moderate/high degree of complexity using EPLAN as the design tool.


  • Formulate and produce complete electrical design package which includes detailed schematics, cable routing diagrams, panel layouts and construction, bills of materials, cable general assemblies, field wiring, etc. based on client’s standard specifications and the customers’ requirements.
  • Coordinate with mechanical and software designers during the mechanical design process to design a control system that will enable the machine to perform its intended function safely and reliably.
  • Liaise with other members of the Controls Engineering Department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology with the goals being enhanced safety, enhanced functionality, design efficiencies and reduced cost.
  • Communicate with other members of the Controls Engineering Department and other groups to ensure that labour budgets and material budgets are adhered to or improved upon.
  • Work with customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers and electricians to solve problems in order to provide the customer with a complete, functional system.
  • Specify all electrical and controls-related hardware and software and produce requisition forms for material purchases.
  • Actively participate or lead internal and customer design reviews and provide feedback/direction when needed.
  • Integrate third party equipment and electronic components into electrical design package. Examples include serial communications, hardware handshaking, opto-isolation, electrical and ultrasonic welding applications, vision systems, motion control products, transducers and signal conditioners.
  • Identify labour hours, hardware costs and schedule estimates to perform hardware design tasks.
  • Verify that electrical design package is complete, accurate and safe based on sound design practices and accepted standards
  • Verify that the I/O lists meet program requirements prior to issue to shop floor.
  • Support electricians/programmers in trouble shooting roles during machine build and integration.
  • Ability to work with the applications group to develop concepts for customer quoting.
  • Understand and apply CE, UL/CSA and NFPA standards to designs.



  • A post-secondary technology diploma or engineering degree or equivalent, specializing in electronics, electrical or controls technology.


  • 7+ years of experience in electrical controls systems design in the industrial automation field.
  • Understanding of PLC’s, robotics, control systems, machine safety and machine operation is required.
  • Working knowledge of EPLAN.
  • Ability to keep abreast of leading-edge technology is essential.
  • Must have ability to work with and communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organization.
